Why Hong Kong Protestor Are Switching to FireChat ?

Protesters massing in Hong Kong’s Admiralty, Causeway Bay and Mong Kok districts are overwhelming wireless carrier networks, making applications such as Tencent Holdings Ltd.’s WeChat and WhatsApp Inc. difficult to use. Demonstrators are fueling the 100,000 downloads of FireChat per day among Hong Kong’s 7 million people, said Stanislav Shalunov, chief technology officer of Open Garden.

Welcoming the Umbrella Revolution

We wait to see what happens after the government adopted a more conciliatory stance of trying to wait out the demonstrators.

Downtown streets that were fairly crowded on previous nights began to empty late Wednesday, as many went home after days outdoors in heat that was sweltering even by Hong Kong’s tropical standards. But many predicted that crowds would build again later on Thursday, as demonstrators already got some rest.
